The M.S. McClellan Advisor
Do you carry slim or narrow ties and what is the "rule" for tie width?
Ties overall are going slim...some more than others. For instance, we carry Breuer ties and they have gone down in width a bit, but still a substantial tie. It's close to the old 80's width. However, if you went to New York and saw the exact same tie from Breuer it would be about 2" in width - noticably trimmer. There's no right or wrong here ... what works in New York (or LA) does not work in Knoxville, Atlanta or Charlotte most times. If there's a rule it's that the width of the tie should be close to the width of the lapel....that's why you see some trim suits/jackets with trim lapels (and the ties to match.) But not all designers have moved to trim silhouettes - so the width of tie we sell, even if trimmer than you're used to, will work fine with your suits (even if you got it 3 years ago).
