In an attempt to fill a void we introduce the M. S. McClellan Advisor. We are in the process of compiling a compendium of the rules of style and proper dress in an effort to answer those burning questions you may have always wanted to know the answer to but were too embarrassed to ask. Of course, you should never worry about asking our sales associates any questions you may have – that’s what we’re here for.
Every month we will add new items to this section so that you will have a valuable resource to refer to in your times of need.
Please feel free to send in your own inquiries to M. S. McClellan. There are no dumb questions – except the one on boxer or briefs and we assume you already know the answer. Ask us anything! Are patent leather shoes always necessary for a tuxedo?
Are white dinner jackets and black tie appropriate for a 6:30 pm beach wedding (June). Also, is a seersucker suit appropriate for a rehearsal dinner (June) or should I stay with a dark suit? Thanks.
Is it acceptable to wear seersucker after or Easter, or must I wait until after Memorial Day to don my beloved seersucker?
My husbands company recently went "business causal". What are some good looks that are not too casual? I really like the layered look, but don't want him to look too bulky. Any suggestions?
I have some questions about storing quality clothing in the proper way. One, moths - what is the best way to prevent moths from eating silk and wool, especially cashmere? Does cedar really work, and if so does it stay effective without occasional sanding down? Also I have heard that human odor attracts moths so it is best to have clothes cleaned before storage, is that true? What if you have cotton clothes that have not been cleaned next to clean wool clothes, will that attract the moths to the wool? Two, is it necessary to use hangers with curvature in the shoulders for suits and sportcoats? I have some nice wooden coat hangers but they are not curved, and I have been told that this shape tends to mis-shape the shoulders of jackets over time. Lastly, what is your opinion on shoe trees? Are they really necessary to maintaining shoes over time? Thanks!

Can I wear brown suede Alden penny loafers in the summer? If so what with?
What makes a suit appear shiny? Some of my suits have a shiny appearance on the lower sleeves and seat of the trousers when held at an angle. Is this from over wear? I have also heard that this can be caused by dry cleaning? Any tips to prevent this from happening?
If attending a summer wedding that is at night and indoors is a seersucker or poplin suit appropriate or is a darker suit the better choice?
