In an attempt to fill a void we introduce the M. S. McClellan Advisor. We are in the process of compiling a compendium of the rules of style and proper dress in an effort to answer those burning questions you may have always wanted to know the answer to but were too embarrassed to ask. Of course, you should never worry about asking our sales associates any questions you may have – that’s what we’re here for.

Every month we will add new items to this section so that you will have a valuable resource to refer to in your times of need.

Please feel free to send in your own inquiries to M. S. McClellan. There are no dumb questions – except the one on boxer or briefs and we assume you already know the answer. Ask us anything! We will post replies to your questions here every month in addition to new items. And have no fear – all questions are completely anonymous.

If you have specific questions about clothing, ordering an item you have seen on this site, a service comment or inquiry that requires action then please submit your message here.

I have some questions about storing quality clothing in the proper way. One, moths - what is the best way to prevent moths from eating silk and wool, especially cashmere? Does cedar really work, and if so does it stay effective without occasional sanding down? Also I have heard that human odor attracts moths so it is best to have clothes cleaned before storage, is that true? What if you have cotton clothes that have not been cleaned next to clean wool clothes, will that attract the moths to the wool? Two, is it necessary to use hangers with curvature in the shoulders for suits and sportcoats? I have some nice wooden coat hangers but they are not curved, and I have been told that this shape tends to mis-shape the shoulders of jackets over time. Lastly, what is your opinion on shoe trees? Are they really necessary to maintaining shoes over time? Thanks!

Hello, Nice web site. What is your recommendation with respect to pleats on men's pants? The fashion magazines are pushing plain front, but I prefer pleats with suits and dress pants. As for casual pants and shorts, flat fronts do seem to look better. Also, what is your recommendation with respect to men's shirt collars? I've always loved button-downs, but the fashion magazines seem to be opposed to those with suits. Yet you still see it all the time, especially with lawyers. Thanks, Bob
